Commercial State Bank

The beginning of Commercial State Bank dates back from May 31, 1902. The new bank weathered the panic of 1907. It survived the 1920’s recession, the Great Depression, as well as the drought of the 1930’s. Commercial State Bank has also survived the late 80’s and early 1990’s recession and the financial crisis of 2007-2008.

In 1910, the bank was purchased by J.N. Warren and his associates, who continued in control until 1923. In 1914, Walter H. Frei became associated with the bank. In 1923 Vice President Walter Frei and his associates purchased the business and he was actively engaged in the development of the institution until his death in 1971. In 1960, Robert H. Frei assumed the Presidency and served in that capacity through 1976. In January 1977, D.R. Juffer was named President and served in that position until December 31, 1955. Robert L. Frei was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors in January of 1992 and became President of the bank in January 1996 and continued in that position until December 31, 2002. Donald R. Kotab assumed the Presidency on January 1, 2003 until 2005. Marcia Honomichl served as President from 2006 until 2013. Michael L. Frei started with Commercial State Bank on December, 31 2001 and was elected as Chairman of the Board of Directors on January 8, 2013 and is currently serving as President since January 14, 2014.

As we reflect on the vast number of years Commercial State Bank has served its customers, the success of this institution has been due in large measure to the people of our community and the current and previous employees of the bank.

The bank has undergone many physical changes in appearances over the past 119 years, the philosophy of serving the community through the quality people it employs remains constant, with President Frei at the helm, and we continue to serve the city of Wagner and surrounding areas. Our main facility continues to stand strong at 204 S Main in Wagner, with no new additional branches foreseen in the future.

We will accomplish our mission by remaining an independent community bank, focusing on our present and future customer needs, and providing challenging and rewarding opportunities for our employees while continuing to provide leadership and involvement in the development of our community. This will facilitate future bank growth and insure dividends to our stockholders.
